When last did you really care about the proper cleaning of your gutter? Don’t panic, we all don’t. However, gutters are very important part of the house as they perform specific functions which could have resulted into the destruction of the house. So, the gutter efficiently allows the flow of vast amounts of rain or snow away from your house. Most houses had little or no priority for the gutter hence, neglecting it for a very long time can seriously cost you both money, time, labor and frustration. In other words, an inefficient working gutter may cost you your house’s foundation and internal structure. Therefore, ignoring the cleanliness and repair of your gutter may require something unavoidable in the future. Here are the ways you can check if your gutter is working effectively.
Check for any blockages
Accumulation of leaves, dirt or debris of any kind can block the path which the water flows through your gutter and this can lead to serious damage to your house if not properly taken care of very quick. Having a blocked gutter will lead to the flow of water finding a new path which is often the downside of your house. This can hence lead to the rot of your fascia boards and even allow water to enter the attic. To escape this heavy destruction, it is best you inspect your gutters regularly and most especially after a big storm that could have possibly dropped debris and dirt into your roof. If you ever find accumulated leaves and dirt in your gutter, you can either clean it yourself or call the maintenance. By doing it yourself, you can remove the blockage by hand while wearing a glove. Make sure you remove the blockages and not only that but also disposing the dirt properly or else they might be back with the help of wind. A trowel or even gutter brush can be very useful in cleaning your gutter from dirt.
Check for leaks or broken parts
Most times, we often forget about checking for any leaking or broken section of our gutter even while cleaning away the blockages. However, if the broken area is large, you can cut out that section of gutter and replace it with another if you have an extra piece lying around. But if the space is small, you can either use a gutter-repair tape or a gutter seal to cover the holes or the tear area. But if the gutter is pulling away from your house, you can install fascia gutter hanger, they will help you reattach your gutter to your house and help support it. Also, if you notice that water is flowing down beside your gutter and along the fascia board, you will have to fix the flashing or add a gutter apron which will help redirect runoff water back into the gutter.
Check for the downpouts
The gutter helps divert water into the downpouts which redirect the water away from your home. This downpouts can be filled so to free it, you can use the gutter brush to clean it. The downpouts must be releasing water on a slope that is a slope that is situated away from your home but if the water settles into the puddle or even if it settles around your building it can flow away into the foundation of your basement which can cause serious problems. You can however use a splash block to direct water away from your house.
